East Molokai

Beautiful beaches are the main attraction of East Molokai. Just east of Kaunakakai lies One Ali'I Beach Park, named for the Hawaiian royalty that frequented the site. Kakahai'a Beach Park is also home to the Kakahai'a County Park and National Wildlife Refuge. Perhaps the most beautiful is Murphy's Beach. Located at Mile Marker 20, this one is also called Mile Marker 20 Beach and contains some of the best locations for swimming, wading, or snorkeling.

The first Christian church built in Molokai now stands in ruins. Reverend Harvey Hitchcock first built the Kaluaha Church mission in 1844. In use until 1940, this site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

East Molokai is also home to many famous churches and temples. Belgian priest Father Damien built the second oldest Saint Joseph's Church in 1876. Father Damien is best know for his extremely self-sacrificing missionary work with the leper colony outside of Kalaupapa. The church bears a statue in his honor.

Father Damien's second church, Our Lady of Sorrows was built in East Molokai in 1874 and is still in use and in excellent condition today. The beautiful stations of the cross were imported from Belgium.
