Kohala Coast
Along Hawai’i’s “gold coast”, South Kohala is home
to the sunniest spot in all of Hawaii. This region receives an annual rainfall
of less than 9 inches. This region is the perfect relaxation destination with
its beautiful beaches and world class golf resorts. Visitors to South Kohala
can swim with dolphins, whale watch, or take part in many ancient Hawaiian traditions,
like the hula, making leis or eating poi at a luau.
A trek through North Kohala offers breathtaking views of Pololu Valley, Waipi'o
Valley and seven other islands. North Kohala also features the summit of Mauna
Kea, home to the largest observatory for optical, infrared, and submillimeter
astronomy. Visitors can tour the summit of Mauna Kea and the observatory daily
from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM at the visitor’s station. Call the station for
road conditions ahead of time.
