Molokai Hawaii
Calm, peaceful, and relaxing, Molokai has been called the Island Lost in Time.
Civilization has only a loose grip on this modest island which does not even
contain a single traffic light. Deserted beaches and breathtaking rainforests
fill the dreams of visitors to Molokai. With a land surface area of only 260
square miles, Molokai is the fifth largest of the Hawaiian Islands. The island
was formed by two volcanoes, one on the east side and one on the west. The only
remnant of the volcano East Molokai is the bottom half with the top half blown
apart and scattered into the Pacific Ocean during a catastrophic event. The
remainder of East Molokai has formed the largest ocean cliffs in the world and
was featured in the film Jurassic Park III.
Known as “The Friendly Isle”, Molokai is one of the least developed
islands within the Hawaiian archipelago. The downtown area of the island’s
largest city, Kaunakakai, is only two blocks long. Molokai is known for it’s
legendary and numerous fish ponds along the southern coast, but is perhaps most
famous as the United States’ oldest site for the sufferers of leprosy,
begun by the famous Father Damien. The disease, officially termed Hansen’s
Disease is seriously diminished throughout the world and no current sufferers
of the disease currently live within the colony on Molokai. However those who
have been cured of the disease still suffer from severe disfigurement. There
are still residents of this kind living in the colony that is now contained
within Kalaupapa National Historical Park.
As one of the most secluded islands in Hawaii, Molokai contains many unique
tourist attractions throughout its regions:
