The Big Island Hawaii
At more than 4,000 square miles in size, Hawai'i is the largest of all the
Hawaiian Islands. Despite recent economic growth and development, only 2% of
the Big Island’s land is considered urban. Green rolling hills, majestic
mountain tops, wide valleys, breathtaking beaches and immense waterfalls dominate
the landscape of Hawai’i. The island features many national parks, gardens,
and wildlife. Whether you’re seeking adventure or relaxation, Hawaii’s
Big Island is the premier vacation destination.
Waimea canyon
Technically belonging to the Kohala district, Waimea is most famous for the
famed Parker Ranch, at one point one of the largest cattle ranches in the world.
Originally a wedding gift from King Kamehameha to Massachusetts sailor, John
Palmer Parker, Parker Ranch produced America’s first “cowboys.”
On the land, Parker captured wild cattle and brought in Mexican ranchers to
teach his Hawaiian workers how to raise the cattle. The ranchers quickly became
known as the “paniolo” derived from the word “Español.”
Today’s Waimea has taken on a decided “western” feel with
locals wearing cowboy boots and hats. Even the stop signs read “Whoa.”
Hilo Hawaii
Located around a beautiful crescent shaped bay is the ancient town of Hilo.
Historically a farming and fishing region, Hilo grew into the commercial center
of the sugar industry. Hilo still maintains its quaint village feel and is a
great place to view the peaks of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. While in Hilo, visit
the Lyman House Memorial Museum, the Pacific Tsunami Museum, the East Hawai’i
Cultural Center, and the Panaewa Zoo.
