Wailua Falls & Wailua River

Just to the north of Lihue is the area of Wailua. The 1,200 foot high Nounou Mountain (also called "The Sleeping Giant") separates Inland from Coastal Wailua. This region features the only navigable river in all of Hawaii, the Wailua River. Visitors to this region can take a tour up the river to the infamous natural wonder, Fern Grotto. Formed by lava, the Grotto serves as a natural amphitheater, lined with tropical ferns. The boat trip to the Grotto leaves from the south side of the river every 30 minutes and lasts 40 minutes. Lucky travelers may also be able to view the many petroglyphs carved into the rock at the mouth of the river. Depending on the weather and tide, these can be visible above the sand.

Many ancient villages and religious sites dot the Wailua River, including The Kamokila Village where King of Kauai, Kaumualii assembled his war canoes. This village was re-created on the original site and contains numerous representations of traditional Hawaiian life.

Another popular attraction along the Wailua River is the Wailua Falls. Featured in the credits of television show Fantasy Island, the 80-foot falls were once the site of cliff divers - native Hawaiian men proving their manhood.

Tourists interested in Hawaiian culture will also want to visit Kauai's Coconut Coast, along the East Side of the island near Wailua. Featuring many coconut groves, the area is littered with sacred spots and petroglyphs.
