West Molokai
The 921 acres surrounding Mo'omomi Beach make up the Mo'omomi Preserve. Maintained by the Hawaii Nature Conservancy the preserve is home to 22 species of native plants that thrive in the windy, salty, dry landscape. Four of these are only found in this part of the world. Also an important nesting site for the green sea turtle, the Preserve is the most intact beach and sand dune area in Hawaii.
Accessible only by 4-wheel drive, the secluded Kawakiu Beach is a favorite among those looking for relaxation. Although the white sand is very beautiful, the rocks and dangerous undertow make swimming here difficult. Kawakiu also contains a few points of archaeological interest as it may have been an ancient fishing village.
