The road to Hana……don’t be left at the airport…a true story!
Book online and you may find yourself with a long walk to Hana on the Hawaiian Island of Maui.
The road to Hana is one of the most scenic adventures on the Hawaiian Islands, boasting 40 miles of slow-moving, twisting and turning roads and one-lane bridges that traverse across the island of Maui to a remote beachside town called Hana. It is not easy to get to Hana and is nearly a three-hour car ride from the airport. But the end destination is extreme beauty and serenity that is uniquely Maui.
Here’s the true story of one traveler who relied on the Internet for all his of vacation planning and, after this experience, is now a believer in the value of a knowledgeable travel professional.
All-Travel recently received a call from a person who planned his Hawaii vacation completely online with another company. He conducted his research, made his selections and booked his entire trip via the Internet without once speaking with an experienced travel consultant for guidance.
This was the traveler’s first vacation to Hawaii. He booked a wonderful hotel located in Hana. The pictures and descriptions were alluring and convincing, but failed to inform him that getting to this lovely hotel and town required additional planning, like a transfer or car rental. He confirmed the hotel and flights to Maui and thought everything was all set. Imagine his surprise when arriving at the Maui airport he realized he did not plan for a transfer or car rental to get him from the airport to Hana.
With no travel agent to call for assistance, his self-booked online travel planning went bad fast. Having never been there before, his lack of professional guidance cost him an expensive and long cab ride from the airport to his hotel. He eventually made it to Hana, but not as seamlessly as he had originally intended when he set out from Los Angeles many hours earlier.
When he contacted the online tour company he booked the trip through (a well-known company which we will not identify), the response was this:
“When booking a holiday package on the Internet, it is very important to research the destination thoroughly before selecting and paying for the package. It was extremely important in this instance because you stated that you had never before been to Hawaii and did not conduct any type of research before you made your booking.”
“You brought up the point that we never called you to advise you that the Hotel Hana Maui was located a distance from the airport. We do not question the bookings made on the Internet as we have no reason to. You stated that you felt we did not take care of you, either before or during your travel. We did provide you with the components of the package which you chose on the Internet, so we did fulfill our side of the agreement.”
“We are truly sorry for all of your problems. Before you travel again, we would like to suggest that you seek out an experienced travel agent who is familiar with the destination you are interested in and can provide the travel guidance that we don’t.”
